how do I get excel to open when windows starts?

Doug_Wood,
Go to: Start / All Programs / Microsoft Office / Excel,
Drag the Office program to the Start folder on the Start Menu.
Make sure that dragging and dropping is enabled for the Start Menu by right
clicking, select properties / Start Menu tab / Customize / Advanced / Enable
dragging and dropping.

Help/Assistance Pane/open Communities

You may want to right-drag the shortcut and select "Copy Here".
Otherwise it will be moved from its current location in the Start
menu. :)
