How do I get japanese characters to appear when I type romanji?

I want to be able to type on my QWERTY keyboard in a Word document something
like "ka" and on the screen will appear the Japanese Hiragana character for
"ka". This happens in the computer lab, but I cannon get my home computer to
do it, although I have changed the Langage settings, and it says Japanese is
an option. I have tried to install IME from my set up CD's, but it
continually says file not found.
