How do I get new lines to snap to the left tab during outlining?

I'm typing a document in outline form. When I come to the end of the line, I
want the next line to snap to the left tab set so that the left columns are
aligned. Instead, it sends the line to the far left margin and I have to
move it manually with the tab button for every single line of text. How
tedious! Can't I set it to automatically snap the line to the left tab
during outlining? This is done automatically in WordPerfect.

You have to create a hanging indent, not just a tab stop.
