How do I get office update to work when a Data1.msp file is missi.

Problems began with Office 2000 Pro (after several years) - couldn't update
and couldn't remove, repair doesn't change anything. Purchased a full version
of Office 2003 Pro and installed (upgraded as reccommended) and still can't
update or remove older version. Apparently the Data1.msp file is corrupt or
locked (won't bootstrap) I can't get access to the file even though it's on
the disk. Does anyone have any solutions.
