I opened a Word 2003 doc and the next time I opened 2007 it is in
Compatability Mode. How do I return to normal.?

Office Button > Save As > Word Document.

You'll then have a .docx of the same thing, alongside the
original .doc. (Word2007 is in "Compatibility Mode" whenever it opens
a .doc file.) But you then won't be able to open it in Word2003, in
case you also have an older computer or are sending it to someone else.

If you want to update the file and not save a copy in the .doc format then
click the Office Button and then click Convert. If you want to save both a
..doc and a .docx copy then as "grammatim" suggested, use Office Button/Save
As/Word Document.

I wanted to tell her about "Convert," but I couldn't find it -- does
it appear only when a .doc is open?

Yes - The convert command is added to the Word options command set while a
Doc format file is open.

I am also having trouble with compatability mode and did as you suggested
with the convert command. Although I no longer see the words "compatability
mode" at the top of my document I still cannot use any of the functions such
as highlighting text to bold, underline, etc. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Chris
