How do I get Outlook to recognize hyperlinks imbedded in emails?

Every time I click on a hyperlink within a received email I get the following
message: Windows can't open thiis file: (followed the last segment of an
address).
I have to select Internet Explorer program from a list of installed programs
and then IE will open the webpage from the hyperlink.
For some reason Outlook is treating the hyperlinks as programs.

How can I resolve this problem?

So its going to the correct server but can't open the web page? What
extension does it use?
