How do I get phone numbers to display selecting my address book

When I select my address book from the tool bar the window displays a name,
display name, e-mail address and e-mail type. I would like to have the phone
number of each person displayed. Is there a way to configure the address
book to display phone numbers on that top level window?

You can't. The address book isn't designed for that. It's designed for looking up electronic addresses, not phone numbers. To look up phone numbers, use the Phone List view in your contacts folder(s).
