How do I get rid of Microsoft Photo Editor?

B

Boris Katz

I cannot open any pictures any more because they are
blocked by Microsoft Photo Editor. I cannot find it in
Add and Remove Programs to delete it. It must have been
tacked onto an update, and I cannot find it to uninstall
it. HELP

Boris Katz,
Photo Editor is included in your typical or complete installation of Office. To remove it you will have to uninstall Office.
I have not tried this on an Office reinstall, but you may try a custom install / select only the applications you desire.
Someone else may suggest a better solution.
Could you please specify what you mean by "blocked"?

I have the opposite question. I had MS Photo Editor and really liked the
sizing aspect. Now that I have MS Office 2003, photos open up in MS Office
Picture Manager, which I don't like as well because it has only pixels, not
inches, whereas Photo Editor gives a choice. Is there any way I can make
photos open up in Photo Editor now that I have Office 2003?

That is not exactly true. On a typical Windows system, Photo Editor is
located at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PhotoEd.
It is possible to simply delete Photo Editor from Explorer or the likes,
and then change your Windows file associations to open some other
image editing program in its place.

For Office XP, Photo Editor is located in the custom installation
directory at "Office Tools" when Office is installed. It can be unchecked.
You do NOT need to uninstall Office XP to take out Photo Editor.

Joy,
You can custom install Photo Editor from your previous version, uncheck all except PE. As stated, its under Office tools.

Chris,

When I got this new XP computer, a computer service man copied everything
over from my old 98, so I do (still) have Photo Editor installed. Is there
any way to choose to open things in it rather than opening in Office Picture
Manager?

Joy,
Can you not open PE first then open your pictures and save while in PE?

Chris,
I guess I'm thinking if I either save photos from a CD or from scanning them
and if they are saved as JPG they automatically go into My Pictures. If I
open them from there they open in OPM. So you are saying instead of trying
to open them from My Pictures, if I open PE and then "find" them in My
Pictures, I could do it that way? (Hope I'm explaining that right. <S>)

Joy,
Yes, open from your program not My Pictures. This will allow you to keep the original picure file in its native format. Everytime you edit any pic, it looses quality. So if you ever need the original you have it. Just do a save as in the file format from PE or PhotoShop, PhotoDraw or Picure Manager etc...
