I have a widescreen laptop and when I show a PowerPoint presentation, there
is black on either side of the presentation. Is there a setting that I can
change like on a widescreen TV?

The aspect ratio on your laptop is 16:10. You need to make your slides that
size or at least 8:5. Go to File/Page Setup and set the width to 16 (or 8)
and the height to 10 (or 5). Do this before you start making a presentation.
If you change an existing presentation it will distort stuff and do other
weird things that you will have to fix slide by slide...........TD

You should change the "page setup" but be aware that changing this may
adversely affect pictures that were created for "regular screen"
slideshows. Have a look at http://www.onppt.com/ppt/article1041.html
