How do I get rid of the paragraph symbols in my Word files?

Suddenly, every time I open an existing Word file, or create a new one, I
have the 'P' paragraph symbols all over the page, showing breaks, end of
lines, etc. I don't want these - but selecting ''View', then 'Normal' or
'Print Layout' doesn't make them go away. How do I get rid of these symbols
from my Word documents?
Thank you!!

Press Ctrl+* or click on the Show/Hide ¶ button on the Standard toolbar. If
this has no effect, go to Tools | Options | View and clear the check boxes
for all "nonprinting characters" or "formatting marks."

For some reasons why it can sometimes be helpful to see these characters,
