How do I get rid of this character?

All of a sudden, new word files and even old ones have started to appear with
what looks like paragraph characters. However I cannot get rid of them. I
don't know where they came from and it's a nuisance. Actually, under
"insert", symbol - it's called a PILCROW SIGN. What caused it's sudden
appearance and how do I get rid of it???
