How do I get rid of this symbol?

It looks like a capital I with a balck blob at the top left hand side of it,
it appeared when i went to press CTRL + C, any ideas?

Do you mean this ¶. This is the pilcrow sign which shows all non-printing
characters. You may also notice a raised period between words. There is a
button on the toolbar which you can toggle off and on. You can use the
keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + 8. You can also find it on Tools | Options
and Formatting marks. Hope this helps.

Do you mean ¶ ? This is a paragraph end marker - Click the matching button
on the toolbar bar CTRL+* (which is what I guess you used to toggle its
display on)

Note that you'll have difficulty with quite a few features of Word if
you don't have your paragraph marks showing.
