How do i get side-by-side figures with caption in center (word)

In the center between them or centered below each? If the former, I'd just
center the entire paragraph, putting the figures--inline--on one line,
separated by spaces or placed with center tabs if desired, and the captions
on the next. For the latter, I use a two-cell table.
