How do I get the calculator to work uning the function key?

Once I discovered the function keys, I've fallen in love with them. (Like fn
+ home mutes the sound). I just noticed that the purple function keys
apperar on the keyboard, mimmicking a calculator, but I can't seem to get it
to work. Any ideas?

This has nothing to do with Word or even Windows, but is a function of your
keyboard/laptop software.
