how do I go from sitename.org/index_files.htm to sitename.org?

I am creating my first website using Publisher 2003 for a friend's
not-for-profit organization. We want people to be able to access the site by
typing in the sitename.org.

I click "Publish to Web"
Then "Save in" and go to FTP locations.
When I try to save it in the ftp:// location of my choice, it tells me the
folder is a "read-only" folder. So, it then gives me a sub folder to save in.

The site loads fine, but you have to type in sitename.org/index_files.htm
because if you only type in the sitename.org it gives an error page.

ANY help would be VERY much appreciated!!

When you rented space from your web host, you should have received a set
of instruction on which folder to upload files to. There are various
ones, including but not limited to public_html, httpdocs, publicdocs,
even your username.

Thanks, but there was no such mention from the host. They are absolutely
atrocious and I wish my friend hadn't used them. Anyway, I digress. Thank
you for your time.

What is the company's name? Sometimes they have instructions on their site.
