how do I incorporate a variable in my presentation?

My presentation is an educational game where children have a choice of
answers and a set of clue options (a bit like who wants to be a
millionaire). Once clicked, the clue icon flickers and dims to show that it
has been used. How can I make this clue icon stay dimmed in future slides so
it cannot be used again in a particular show?
