How do I insert a hyperlink with a long filename (132 characters)

In MS Word 2003 Professional edition, when I insert a hyperlink to a file
that has a long filename due to the network path, the hyperlink does not
work. The error message is "Cannot open the specified file"

When I link the same file from a location that has a shortened file location
it works.

Does anyone have a work around to this problem? I don't have the option of
moving the network folder so it has a shorted pathname due to company
guidelines.
