How do I Insert a Picture into a Document without it affecting the surrounding text?

I have a cv complete and would like to insert a picture along the left
side, but when i insert a picture it moves all the text in my document.
is there any way i can insert a picture without it affecting the
surrounding text?

The only way to get a picture into your document without hiding the
text or having it taking up any space (and hence, move the text that
was in that space) is to place the picture behind the text.
To do this:
Insert the picture into the document - paste, Insert/Picture/From
File..., etc
Right-click on the picture and choose Format Picture
Select the Layout tab and choose Behind text
Note that the picture contrast compared to your text may make the text
difficult to read; increasing the brightness of the image may help (or
adjust the gamma if you have a good image editor).
