I just loaded visio and I don't see a electrical template in the left column;
how do I insert it so I can easily use R, C, inductors, etc?

I guess you are talking about stencils.
In 2003 it would be File, Shapes, Electrical Engineering, one of the stencils
I admit I don't find the bare necessities quickly either. The resistor
symbol Visio has, is not used here.
Visio crash course :
There are templates, stencils, masters and shapes.

Our electrical and electronic stencils have all the international
symbols

What standards do you use? IEC? DIN? Here in Australia we used IEC,
published under Aust Standard 1102.xxx

Suggestions:

Sandrila (see Paul Herber's reply to you) have good ones readily available.

Or - as I do - I have students creating their own shapes, Stencils and
Templates. Naturally I also create my own.

If you have specific needs, it may be worth while creating your own, or
perhaps ready-made Visio Templates or 3rd Party like Sandrila's.

As a general rule, stencils created in an earlier Visio versions are
compatible with later version Visio, however a stencil created with a later
Visio version may not be compatitble with earlier Visio versions.

For that reason, if creating a Stencil in (say) Visio 2007, it is a good
idea to "Save As" a Visio 2002 Stencil *.vss.

Let us know more specifically what you need.

As to your basic question "how to insert (a template/stencil)", two
answers - you can put them in the default folder for your Visio version or
you can create your own folder and point to it in Visio Tools | Options |
Advanced tab | File Paths ....

Depending on version, the default path could be C:\Program Files\ Microsoft
Office\Visio 12\Solutions ...

Simplest way is to find the default location on your system is simply
"Search" for *.VST and/or *.VSS

Hope that helps

Paddy
