How do I install a root certificate in Entourage?

D

Dave Taylor

I¹m a bit stymied. I have followed the directions I can find online to
install a root certificate from my SSL server, but I¹m still seeing an error
when I try to send email securely using SMTP, not because the remote end
won¹t accept the SMTP connection securely, but because Entourage won¹t see
the certificate.

Here¹s what I¹ve done and how I installed it:

ge.html

I¹m afraid that the article¹s wrong, however, because when I try to USE the
certificate I still get that same $#@$#@ error message about the root
certificate not being properly installed on my Mac.

I¹m running Mac OS X 10.4.8 and Entourage 11.2.5

Help, someone, how do I fix this?!

Thanks.

Simple answer is ³we don¹t know²

There have been a few messages about this recently. I have tried to do it
for over a year, without success (and I¹m meant to be an expert!).

There are detailed instructions here:
atid=&topic=19>
....but they don¹t work for me or for others.

I will try escalating this with the developers and see if I can get a
sensible answer out of them.

I¹d definitely like to know how to do this, whatever I might need to install
on my server and/or add or change within Entourage, Barry. It¹s something
that¹s going to become more and more important as more people use open wifi
networks: without a secure way to both get your email and send your outbound
email EASILY with POP or IMAP, people are going to realize that Entourage is
actually quite dangerously insecure. In fact, offering up a secure version
of Entourage that includes more easily used capabilities could be a very
nice selling point / upgrade (hint hint)...

OTOH I did pretty much exactly those same steps here and am able to
access an IMAP and SMTP server using TLS without any certificate
warnings.

I tell a lie - I didn't install the server's cert, I installed the cert
from the CA that signed the server's cert. The certificate used by our
MTA for SMTP is different (the machine's different) from the
certificate used by our IMAP store. The same CA signs our intranet web
server's cert.

About the only thing I can remember about the process was that
Entourage did still think the cert wasn't trusted for a 'while', which
coincided with Keychain Access also marking the thing as "not trusted".
I think there's some stickiness in the keychain code. Logging out and
back in again ought to fix that, but I honestly can't exactly remember
what I did. Try and get Safari to make an https connection to your mail
server's SSL ports?
