How do I install Office 97 into Windows XP ?

When I do it, it says "This product is an upgrade to Microsoft Office 97. To
use it, you must own one of the qualifying products listed on the Microsoft
Office 97 box."

I threw away the box years ago. It's worked on Windows 98 all this time. I
bought a new PC with XP. I tried that compatibility trick, but no good.

The clue is in the error. Why on *earth* would compatibility mode enable you
to install an upgrade without the need for a qualifying product?! It worked
under 98 because you had an appropriate QP installed. If you no longer have
the *original* product you used to qualify, then the upgrade licence is null
and void. You will now have to purchase a new Office licence.

You need the CD (or floppy) of an earlier version of Office.

As someone else posted you need the qualifying product BUT! if you have
a newer version of XP with service pack 2 integrated you need to get a
later version of Office.

Office97 will probably not install properly on a machine running XP and
SP2.

If you have XP w/o SP2 integrated, you can remove SP2, install
Office97, install ALL the updates and service packs for Office97 and,
only then, reinstall SP2.
