How do i interogate a database with code

using word97 and/or Word 2000
Andy N suggested this as the solution to a problem i am working on. the data
file would be about 100 records with 2 fields , bCode and bName. I have
bCode in my macro and i want to covert it to bName. Can anyone point me to a
place i might find more info on this. I want to be able to have the data
file in a generic format if possible. Thanks for any help.
