How do I keep a column's position fixed?

I have a spreadsheet in which I want to keep the left column always in the
left-most position on the screen, even as I scroll to the right past the
first page of displayed data. The column has a list of payees that I always
want visible - even as I scroll through the months of payments to the right.
I've seen this done, but can't figure out how to do it. Can anyone help?
I'm using Excel 2000. Thanks!!

freezing rows and columns...see Window menu).
