How do I keep my Heading 1 graphic out of my TOC?

I'm using Word 2003, and I want the beginning of each of my chapters (Heading
1) to have an obvious visual reference when the reader scans through the
book. I placed a graphic in line with the text on the same line as Heading 1
and tabbed it to the right margin. It looks great - just what I want. Problem
- it comes in with the TOC. I can take them out, but I need to leave this
document for others and want them to be able to re-run a TOC without having
to do that.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

One approach would be to generate the TOC from TC fields instead of the
headings, but that would not make it easier for your successors. As much as
I hate to advocate ever using wrapped graphics when inline ones work fine,
this may be an instance when a wrapped graphic, anchored to the heading,
will be necessary. Alternatively, you might put the heading and the graphic
in two cells of a single-row, two-column, unbordered table. Just make sure
that the graphic is not formatted with a heading style. Oh, another
possibility, considering styles, would be to format the entire paragraph,
including the graphic in a body text style and apply the heading style only
to the heading text.

Hi Mary Lee

The best solution depends, in part, on where you want the graphic to appear.

If the graphic appears above or below the heading, then put the graphic in a
separate paragraph, using a custom style called, say, Heading1Graphic, and
formatted to suit your needs. If it appears above the chapter heading, and
each chapter starts on a new page, then modify that style to have Page Break
Before, and make sure that Heading 1 does not have Page Break Before set.

If the graphic appears to the left or right of your paragraph, then I
suggest creating a style with a frame, with the frame positioned
appropriately. Put the graphic in the text on a separate line, then apply
your framed graphic style. Then, drag the anchor to make sure the frame is
anchored to your Heading 1 paragraph (to see the anchors, Tools > Options >
View > Anchors). A paragraph in a frame that is anchored to a heading won't
show up in the table of contents.

You may need to modify your Heading 1 style to fit appropriately.

Post back if you need more info.

Hope this helps.

Thanks again, you guys. I ended up using the frames method - I was thinking
about that anyway. I found I had to keep the frame outside the margin or else
it would interfere with the nice underline I have going on underneath my
heading 1. It prints out OK, though, and I had actually wanted it out there
anyway. If our standard office printers could print on the edge of the page,
I would have opted for that - the point being for chatper heads to show up
easily as one thumbs through a printed copy. I think this is going to work.

Thanks again.
