How do I line up commas if I am using a decimal tab.

Turmoil

I have a table that I am inserting $1,000,000.00.

When I use commas the decimal tab is not aligned with the decimal tab
in the other rows.

What am I doing wrong

What do you use as the decimal separator in your locale?

That's not the answer to the question.

If you want negative numbers in red, insert an Excel spreadsheet rather than
use a Word table.

The way the decimals are separated in the Number Sample that appears on the
Regional Options tab of the Regional and Language Options item in the
Windows Control Panel.

In some countries a comma is used as a separator, in others its a period.

But if you want negative numbers in Red, use and Excel spreadsheet in your
document so that you can use Excel's cell number formatting capability.

Doug's reply makes a lot of sense . . . a decimal tab is made to line u
the _decimal_, not the commas. Excel has the capability of "conditiona
formatting," with which you can make all negative numbers automaticall
turn red. You could then insert the spreadsheet directly into Word i
need be

the commas and decimals aligned

It is true that you need Excel to apply the red format automatically to
negative numbers, but it is also true that a decimal tab will align numbers
on the decimal point *whether or not it is present.* In other words, you can
align numbers as various as these:

$1,200.00
2.14159
30,000
(300.00)
$500*

All will align on the first nonnumeric character that is not a thousands
separator (the comma in English usage). This means that you can use
parentheses, note reference marks, and a variety of other text (including
spaces) after the numbers, and the number will align on either the decimal
point or the place where it would be if there were one. And note that
parentheses are commonly used to indicate negative numbers in Word
documents.

What isn't accurate?

If that stupid WordForums.Com thing would thread posts properly, (and if
your response was to the relevant post which I am assuming it is), I would
not have to ask that question.

With proportional spaced fonts, the numbers all occupy the same space, so if
you have the same number of digits between each set of commas and the
between the last comma and the decimal point, if the number is aligned on a
decimal tab, then the commas will be lined up.

If you are mixing a number of Indian Rupees with Dollars then they won't
line up because the number of digits between the last two commas is not the
same.
