How do I make a document editable?

I have eleven pages of text that I've transferred over on a USB port, from
Word 2003 to Word 2007. When I open it, I can't edit it at all. I can only
read it. How can I make the entire document editable?

Are there any warning messages, or status bar messages?
Has your Word 2007 trial expired?
