How do I make a shortcut key for a symbol in OneNOte?

In Word, when I open the symbol dialog box, I can assign shortcut keys to
symbols, but I don't have that option in OneNote. I am using a laptop, so I
don't have a keypad to use the numeric shortcuts.

Best way is to assign an AutoCorrect to it. From the FAQ:

6.2 How do I insert a symbol?
Use the Character Map (Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools) to
find the symbol you want and copy/paste it into OneNote. If it's a symbol
you expect to use a lot create an AutoCorrect entry for it. Tools |
AutoCorrect and create a new entry -- use an uncommon string (like "sss")
and have AutoCorrect replace it with the symbol you want.
