How do I make lines in a document that I can type on?

I am typing up a document and I use shift and the and dash button to make a
line. However, when I go to type on the line it spaces out. How can I avoid
this. I want to type on the line without it making a skip in the line.

One option is to "draw" a graphic line, use the line tool on the draw toolbar.

JR, the line option on the drawing toolbar is dimmed.
