How do I make my hyperlink to a PDF a .gif.

I want to scan and thumbnail the first page of a magazine article that I
have put into afolder and linked to on my page. I assume that is the best
way to change the graphic from a link to a pic. Now, after I do the scan,
how to I make the .jpg replace the article title I now have hyperlinked. Or
should I just place the .jpg above the link andmake the link smaller?
Thoughts?
