how do I make Word dumb!

I want word to do what i type in but it keeps trying
unsuccessfully to interpret what i want to do and change
things. ie- on my resume i want the date "1999-2000" and
then a small description of my job during that time
indented. if I press enter it thinks the date is a list
or something and reduces its font, restricts access to it
(i cant change its font or the date) and puts "2000-
2001"below it so I can continue some sort of list. And
howcome every time i type in an email address it turns
blue and underlines it! If I print it out no one can
click on the piece of paper to write an e-mail. And when
in a document if I change/delete some things or press
enter to insert a line it reduces to 10 font for some
reason.

I really wish the program would stop this. Or ask me if
it can make these assumptions.

Sorry for the rant but its been building up for some time.

I completely agree. If had I wanted it differently than
the way I did it then I would have formatted it that way,
thank you!

Go into Tools/Options. You can turn off a lot of the stuff
it does when it assumes it knows what you REALLY meant.
grr. Check out the stuff on the View tab to see if
removing any of those make your life a little easier. Plus
turn off auto-correct features you don't want. I also turn
off ALL auto format stuff.

Auto-Correct? Auto-Format? No thanks! I am not an idiot, I
can think for myself!

I agree completely!!!!

I just had a document that completely renumbered itself THREE TIMES!!!!
<<taking a deep breath>>

However, if you turn off automatic numbering how, then, do you create a
document where the numbering will be consistent from paragraph to paragraph?

This one just about gave me a nervous breakdown (honestly!) and if anyone
has some tips on how to get Word to number documents the way I want them to,
instead of how it thinks it should, I would be grateful...

I even set up styles, and headings and everything!! Then I made one simple
change and it renumbered the whole document -- including un-numbered
paragraphs -- with 3.1.2.76, 77, 78, etc. I didn't notice until I'd saved
(I'm a "save often" fanatic) so had to change each one manually.

Probably should start a new topic just about numbering, because I have a
feeling I'm not alone here.

See http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Formatting/TameAutoFormat.htm. "Automatic
numbered lists" and "Format beginning of list item like the one before it"
and "Internet and network paths with hyperlinks" are the specific settings
giving you grief in this instance.

See http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html. And if
you want to start a thread on numbering, you might want to do it in
microsoft.public.word.numbering (or you could join one of the many already
ongoing there).
