How do I manage entries on FP 2000 "Guest Book"

J

Jim T.

I cannot find how to edit, delete, or otherwise manage comments posted on the
guest book form in my web, (Called Bulletin Board). They show up on the web,
and in an email to me, but do not show up on the folder "guestlog htm" as
directed.

That's probably because you modified the guestbook template to send the email to you
- delete it and redo it using the template unedited

You do not need to delete and start over.
Make sure in your web settings that you have check - show hidden files and
folders. This can found from the Menu.
Then refresh the web site through Frontage and you will see additional
directories that are hidden by default. You will then be able to locate your
guestlog file and edit it. The hidden folders will an _ before the name as
so to make this directory hidden from anyone else, therefore disallowing
anyone from viewing the contents.

Hope this helps

Files in hidden folders are only hidden in FrontPage. For everyone
else, they are the same as any other folder (except _private folder
which is never hidden in FrontPage, and which has permissions set to
block access from those unauthorised to access it.)

The only advantage the hidden folders have is that the contents is
hidden from FrontPage search components, though NOT from other
searches.

That won't solve the problem that the guestbook is not longer valid since it has been modified (to a normal form) to send mail
instead of write to guestlog.htm

When a new guestbook is created, a new guestlog is also created. You create
as many different ones as you want. Up creation, you can specify the name of
the guestbook file along with a new guestlog file and location. As long as
you specify a different name, the original will not be replaced.

This will auto set internal server parameters for the guestbook to work.
After setting up new book and it still does not work, then it is with the FP
server extensions. If it does work, then a comparison of code can be made
between the 2 forms as to what the problems are with the original. Also it
will automatically send it a guestlog file. To send it email, manual
settings needs to be made in form properties.

Hi Stefan

Thank you for taking your time. When I opened up "form properties", it
allowed me to put in the email address as well as the guestlog.htm. I did
not have to modify it at all.

I am relatively (2 yr) new at computers, 69, and just trying to learn Front
Page, so I don't know the finer points, but I think that I am getting there -
slowly.

Office Depot today tried to teach me about "hidden files". Does this sound
like something I should pursue?

Thank you Mike. I'm going to put all of this information together and give
it another try. I have already deleted the guest book, but I am going to try
another one. Appreciate your help.
