How do I manage the Directory Cache?

Updating the directory cache every time delays my Visio start up. None of
the other Office products need to do this (or do it in a manner that is
invisible to the user.) How do I change the settings for the directory cache
so it becomes a background operation? There are no references to the
directory cache in the Visio Help files.

If your directory cache is updating everytime you run Visio, then something
is wrong with your installation. It should only update when stencils,
templates or add-ons have changed.

Visio 2000 and 2002 scan the existing environment on first launch, after a
repair, and after installing new add-ons / templates / stencils. The data
gathered is updated in the user profile and should be found on next launch.
Since your system is doing this scan on every launch, it sounds like your
profile is not storing the information. You may have Mandatory profiles in
your environment, which cannot be updated, and this would be the side
effect.

You may need to work with an IT admin in your organization if this is the
case. One way to work around the problem would be to store the Mandatory
profile *after* Visio has been successfully run and closed once.
