How do I mark text so that I can use table identifier?

In the 2003 version of Word I could mark text with a table identifier letter
(A, B, C, et.) and then build a table with it. In the 2007 version you can
create a table of figures using the table of figure options and then
selecting a table identifier, but I don't know how to mark the text in the
first place.
