How do I marquee photos?

I would like to make a webpage with a few photos fading in and out in an
alternating left to right direction--sort of like a radar effect where the
blips (or my photos) are in the same spot but the scrolling that goes over
makes them look like they're fading.

Does anyone know how to do this? I've seen it done by a kid but I didn't
want to ask.

Although you could probably get fancy with javascript, the first thing I'd
try would be to create the entire strip as one animated GIF.

If they are realistic photos, the GIF color depth might not be adequate.
