How do I modify a template to permanently suit my needs?

I have a template that almost says what I need it to, but not quite. I have
been changing it every time I open it, and cannot find the way to permamently
save the changes to the template itself. Help!

You can't modify a template, but you can take a "blank" version of a page
which has you changes and save *that* as a new template, and then set that
new template as the default for all pages in a section.

If you need help with the specifics of that, replay and let us know and be
sure to specify which version (2003 or 2007) you're using.

Yes, Erik is right. You cannot save changes to an existing template, but you
can apply the existing template to a page, make the modifications that you
want, and save that as a new template.
To prevent these template versions from piling up, you can delete previous
versions from the My Stationery (My Templates in 2007) group. You can do that
via right-clicking the template name in the pane.

if you make changes & then save template using exact same name as original
template, it will prompt OK? to overwrite (if orig template is under My
Templates).
