how do i number cells in a column from 1-506 in excel

To place constants down the column.
A1: 1
A2: 2
Select cells A1:S2 and drag down to row 506 at the fill handle.

The little bulge on the lower right corner of a selection is the fill handle.
It can be on the left if the right side is not visible.

To place the row number into the column such that they would adjust
with deleted rows or could be extended if you insert rows.

A1: =ROW()
A1:A506 into the name box to the left of the address bar
Ctrl+D to copy down

Select A1, enter 1
Select A1:A506
Edit > Fill > Series.

OR:

Select A1, enter 1
Press Ctrl, and use the fill handle to drag down as far as you wish.
