how do i open a document that 'cannot be accessed'

An Excel spreadsheet (Office 2003) is giving the following message. "File
cannot be accessed. The file may be read only, or you may be trying to
access a read only location. Or, the server the document is stored on may
not be responding".

It is my file and I have not protected it. It does not offer the option of
open as 'read only'. It is stored on the c drive of my standalone notebook.
The same message occurs when I try to open it on the back up drive and on a
memory stick on another notebook. I have checked for and corrected errors in
Office using the add/remove software option. No other file is responding in
this way.

Another thing to try is to remove all files from your temp folder.

Close all open applications. Then click Start, run and type %temp% and click OK.
Delete everything from that folder.
