how do I open a iwork .pages file in word

..pages files, created I believe by iWork on Mac.
Is there a converter or way to open them in Word?

I find it hard to believe that iWork can open .doc files but Word can not
open theirs.

none on the MSFT side that I know of (FWIW!). But iWork can export to
all kinds of formats including for the MSFT Office apps. That's your
best bet.
