How do i open a second instance of word?

I

I've been using an older version of Word for a long time now, probably Word
95 and using it since it was new. Now I'm trying to make friends with Word
2003.

I really would like to have two copies of Word running at the same time
(like I always have been doing) but I haven't been able to do that with 2003.
Is there
some obscure setting that has to be made?

Is there some particular reason you want more than one instance of Word
running? You can open as many documents/windows in Word as you like, and
they're all displayed separately on the Taskbar by default.

Yep, it is definitely obscure. In Tools > Options > View, check the box for
"Windows in Taskbar".

This doesn't actually run a whole separate copy of the Word code; it just
puts each open document in a separate window instead of making them children
of a single window.

See http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/SDIMDI.htm for some of the
implications of this setting.
