How do I open an .mdi or .tif document in Word?

Hi John,

The file types you mentioned (.tif and .mdi) are graphic content files rather than documents. .Mdi is a MS proprietary one based on
..TIF. Both of those file types can contain multiple page pictures. A .TIF file can be inserted into a Word document
(Insert=>Picture) to show the top page, an .MDI file format is usually not recognized by that method.

If you're using Word 2003 or 2007 you can open the .MDI/.TIF files in
MS Office Document Imaging and then 'send' the content to Word.

MS Office Document Imaging is an optional part of MS Office 2003 and 2007 but it is not installed by default. (It can be installed
from the
Microsoft Office choice listed in Add/Remove Programs by clicking on the [Change] button) In your case it sounds like you have
already installed it and used it to scan.

I have used MDI to scan a page. I need to open it in Word so I can add to
it. How? <<

I scanned them in MDI using OCR aznd saved a copy in each format but when I try
to open either in Offie I get an unreable page of symbols. Maybe that means
the OCR did not work..

Hi John,

What version of Office are you using?

If you're seeing the pages correctly in MS Office Document Imaging are these pages of typed text in a language that matches one of
the proofing tools available in your version of Word?

You can't 'open' the graphic files in Word as mentioned previously, they are not documents, just pictures of documents.

Does your scanner include its own OCR software (such as AABBY Finereader? If so try scanning with that software and sending the
results to Word.

From MS Office Document Imaging, open one of the .MDI or .TIF files and from the Tools menu use either 'Recognize Text Using OCR' or
'Send Text to Word'. What results do you get when using those tools?
