How do I open backed up pst files on extrnl hard drive?

I have backed up my email files to an external hard drive. When I try to open
it, the computer does not recognize a program to open the data.

I guess you have backed up your *.pst files directly from MS Office folder to
an external drive. If you want to use them, do following:
1- Control Panel ---> Mail --> Data Files ---> Add ---> and then select your
*.pst file from the "open/save" window.
