How do I open in word not word pad?

Recently my computer started opening all new word documents in word pad. If
I imported an existing word document it would be converted to word pad. The
only way I could open it as a normal word document is to right click and hit
"open with...'" then choose word. How do I reset word as my default path to
open my documents?

Hi tilda -

You've wandered into the Mac Word ng, but this should fix it:

Rt-Clk a Word icon but instead of choosing Word directly pick 'Choose
Program' from the shortcut menu. Select Word in the dialog box that opens up
& make sure to put a check in the box labeled "Always use...".

CyberTaz,

Thanks. I just tried opening a WordPad document. This time when I right
clicked the file instead of hitting "open with" I clicked "properties" and
listed in the General tab was the option to change "open with..." when I
selected Windows microsoft word and hit apply, it changed the open with
default for all my drives. I am now a very happy camper. I have kept your
"fix" suggestion in case this happens again and I can't fix it this way.

Word Pad? Are you *really* on a Macintosh?

If yes, then select a sample document from the misbehaving ones in the
Finder. Select "get info" in the finder's file menu (or hit cmd-i)
In the panel that appears, turn down the "open with" triangle, choose
Microsoft Word 11.3.0 (or whatever your version of Word is) from the
list you can display by clicking on the selector box that must
currently be saying "Word Pad" (Is there really a version of Word Pad
for Mac?). Finally, check the "Change all..." button, That's it.

If you are not using a Mac, then
1. Wait for full moon
2. Sacrifice a chicken ( a goat in severe cases)
3. Rub the side of your lappy to wake the Word Pad Wizard.
4. It will appear, and claim it is "My Word Pad Wizard"
4a That is blatant lie. It is *nothing* to do with me.
5 - 9. Answer yes, no, maybe, I could use further reassurance to the
next 4 questions
10. Click your way through the ELUA and then explain to your firstborn
that he/she now belongs to Microsoft.
11. Tilda is such a nice name. Sorry to have had a bit of a joke here.
12. Can I call myself Mac Ron?
12b. That's an inside joke. Sorry.

I'm glad you got a sensible reply from Bob (CyberTaz). I felt a bit
sheepish after playing with your question.

Glad it worked out - same basic principle :), although Elliott's approach is
quite intriguing! I'll have to try that after lunch ;-)
