How do I place a footnote inside a marginal note in Word?

Within Word 2002 I am trying to place my footnotes inside a marginal note on
the right page margin.

I already tried modifying the template and adding a frame to it but
footnotes are still being placed at the page or paragraph bottom, depending
on the setting chosen when inserting them.

There's no way to do this with automatic footnotes. If you want marginal
notes, you will have to create them manually with frames anchored to the
paragraphs where they are referenced.
