How do I play a movie in a Publisher website?

T

Turchan

I would like to be able to play short video clips on some of my web pages. I
have seen this done on other pages where a Windows Media Player box on the
screen will allow control of the play of the video. Is this possible with
Publisher?

David, I went to the URL you recommended to Turchan, as I have the same
question. I'm a bit confused by the answer to the FAQ, though. I get the part
about uploading the media file (in my case, video file) to the location where
my web files are hosted, but I'm not sure what is meant by "link to the
file's URL." How do I do that? I'm not sure what to look for in the Publisher
articles. Can you help?

Instead just upload the media file and link to the files URL as covered on

Keep in mind - "web site 101" - every file on a web site, regardless of file
type (be it a html page, a pdf, a image file, a video file), is bound
together by "hyperlinks". A hyperlink is the URL, or address, or path (same
things) of the file needed.

If you uploaded the media file to a folder, for example a folder on your
site you named "media" then the path to that file is it's address, the URL.
For example - http://www.mydomainnamehere.com/media/myvideofile.wmv
When you hyperlink the text or graphic object on your web page that you want
to point to the media file, you select the web address option in the
hyperlinking dialog and you enter the URL of the file.

David,
I am so confused. I have been trying to get a media file to play for 4
days now.
I uploaded it into file manager at Yahoo Web hosting. It is at my web
address/media/file.wmv, and the link says exactly the same. Yet, when I
publish and then click on my icon, it says the "page" cannot be found. When I
click on the file in File Manager, it will play the media. I tried to copy
exactly what you have here, and it still doesn't work.

Typical newbie mistake, I've covered this quite a few times here. Be sure to
read my article - http://www.davidbartosik.com/2004/11/web-site-advice.htm .
In the article you'd find this:

Unless you specifically ordered a Windows/IIS server from your web host,
your site is probably hosted on a Unix box. The thing to know then is that
Unix is case sensitive. Windows is not. Another thing to know is that
embedded spaces are not supported in a URL. What does all this mean? It
means you need to name the files in your site (images, pages, downloads)
with a proper naming convention. Use all lower case characters and no
spaces. For example - mywidgetspage.htm (GOOD!) my Widgets Page.htm (BAD!)
get_your_own_weebles.htm (GOOD!) GetYourownweebles.htm (BAD!).

There is your mistake. Look at how you spelled the media file in your
previous post. Then go to the page and hover the mouse over the link and
look in the browsers status bar at how you spelled it.

David,
Thank you so much. So, bottom line, I need to rename the file in my file
manager with all lower case OR make the link show the two upper case letters
that my brother used when he made the file? Is it an either or? Just as long
as they match?
I really do appreciate your help. I will make the corrections soon and
republish.
Again, thank you. You are a great help.

Long term solution you want to only use lower case letters on all files of
the site.
Otherwise you have the burden of having to remember what letters are
upper-case whenever you type a URL or past along a URL.

Yes, David. I understand that. I called my brother as soon as I got your
