How do I prevent changes to actual work hours?

Changes to % complete, or expected finish date is changing the values of
actual hours worked. Why? and how do I prevent this from happening?

Go to Tools Options Calculations tab and deselect the Update Task Status
Updates Resource Status checkbox. But before you do, think to make sure
that's really what you want to do. % Complete refers to duration. If Bob
is scheduled to work 100% on a 5 day task this week and the task is 50%
complete, that means that the work that was scheduled between Mon 8am and
Wed 12 noon has been performed. Doesn't that imply that 20 man-hours of
work would have actually been done during that time period? Or if it looks
like the 5 days was an underestimate and it really looks more like 10 days
and so you change the expected finish date, hence the remaining duration,
doesn't it make sense that the task is really only 25% complete after doing
that same 20 man-hours? Or if you change the % Complete to 50% of what is
now a 10 day task, doesn't that imply we've actually done 40 man-hours of
work on it to get there?

There are 3 percent completes - % Complete, % Work Complete, and % Physical
Complete. Unless the work is distributed unevenly over the task, % Complete
and % Work Complete will usually be in synch although it's not always so.
Where a lot of people get confused is assuming that % Complete is the same
thing as % Physical Complete, which it is not. 50% complete means that half
of the working time the task was expected to take has had its scheduled work
done.

Hope this helps...
