How do I prevent cursor becoming pointer in Word?

My standard cursor becomes a dark black pointer as soon as I move it from the
insertion point in ordinary text and in cells in tables. I find this very
irritating and it never used to happen before. The mouse customising
facility in the Windows Control Panel doesn't seem to help.
