how do i prevent Outlook 2007 from hijacking my mailto: settings?

When I click on mailto: links in my browser, Outlook 2007 insists on opening
a message window to handle them. WinXP Pro. Browser is Firefox.

I have gone to Folder Options in Win XP and changed the registered
mailto: handler to my preferred mailer (Thunderbird) twice and both times
Outlook has (after rebooting) changed those settings by registering itself as
the mailto: handler.

Outlook is not configured as my default mail client (Options/Other/General).

How can I stop Outlook from hijacking my settings?

Unfortunately Outlook has a habit of doing this everytime you install an
update....I'm not sure you can do anything about it other than uninstalling
Outlook. if you aren't using it, uninstall it....
