How do I prevent Outlook from sending duplicate emails?

When sending an email to the twelve people on my distribution list, my
Outlook program will occasionally send numerous copies of the same email to
many of the recipients. Recently my son received 15 copies of the same email.
When I try to cancel the sending function, nothing happens. The only way I
can stop the duplicate sending is to close Outlook, shut down the Internet
connection, and reopen Outlook. Then I can go to the "Outbox" and delete the
original message.

What causes and how can I prevent this from happening? It's embarrassing.

Do you have an antivirus application scanning your outgoing email? that will
often cause this. Disable email scanning to fix it.

Thanks, Diane, for the response. I already checked that and ensured that
outgoing emails were not being scanned. Any other ideas?
