How do I produce concentric circles for atomic structure

I wish to draw concentric circles and a annotate them with crosses on the
circles and indicate numbers of protons and neutrons within the central
circle.
I am using Microsoft Office Word 2003.

To facilitate drawing concentric circles, draw a point or type a period
where you want the center to be. Then, with the mouse pointer on the center
point, press both Ctrl and Shift while dragging the mouse. Shift constrains
the oval to a circle, and Ctrl draws it symmetrically from a center point.
The crosses could be hand-drawn, but if you have to add text, it would
probably be better to put both the crosses and the text in an unbordered
text box drawn on top of the circles. You may have better luck keeping all
this together if you use a drawing canvas (Insert | Picture | New Drawing).

One more thing: if your circles are not exactly concentric despite your best
efforts, you can select all the objects and use the Draw | Align command (on
the Drawing toolbar) to Align Center and Align Middle.

Draw a cross so that you havea centre point form which to work. Click on the
draw ellipse tool and position the mouse cross hair on your centre point,
hold down Shift Ctrl and drag out a circle. Repeat for as many circles as you
need. Now for positioning the structures. Copy the vertical cross hair line
and right click on it so that you can Format Autoshape and enter the degrees
you want to rotate the line. Having rotated it, move it so that it lies
across the centre of your cross hairs. Nudge it accurately into position with
the arrow keys. Now you have the point on the large circle at which to place
a structure circle. Repaeat the exercise with more lines rotated at different
degrees to cut your main circle.

I hope this is clear and helps
