How do I protect cells in a table in Microsoft Word from being ch.

I'm trying to create a table (4 rows, 2 columns). I want only the information
in the 2nd column to be edited. How can I protect the first column? Also I
need to know how I prevent the table from auto-resizing. It needs to stay the
way it is now.
